How to pick a piano tuner
You may be wondering, is it really that important who I pick to tune my piano? We say yes and we’d like to give you a couple quick pointers on how to pick a piano tuner.
This is a quick article offering 3 simple pointers and tips to keep in mind when hiring a piano tuner in Grand Rapids.
Technical Training
Pianos are made up of thousands of moving parts. Think car engines are confusing, ever looked inside a piano? Sometimes fixes are simple and quick but sometimes they are very complicated, and having someone who knows what they’re doing under the hood of your piano is important.
Ronnie has tuned hundreds of pianos himself but beyond that has surrounded himself with legends in the piano tuning industry that have worked for Story & Clark, Kimball of Chicago and other world class companies since 1965. Together, Herrema & Sons provides over 50 years of piano tuning experience. So you’re in good hands!
Love of Music
Tuning is a combination of technical skill and passion. We believe the best tuners are not just Piano Mechanics, but the ones that love music and love playing the piano.
Ronnie Herrema (owner of Herrema & Sons Piano Co.) is a music writer and producer who started playing piano when he was 9 years old. Though he hated those years of lessons, he’s now incredibly grateful his mother signed him up for lessons because it’s one of his greatest joys in life.
He met his wife Anna (a violin player) playing piano for a wedding. Since meeting they continued to play at local churches and write and record music together.
They’ve written hundreds of songs, some of which you can hear at ronnieherrema.com and are currently recording a children’s lullaby album.
Music is Ronnie’s passion and he loves helping customers keep their pianos in tune so they can enjoy music all year long.

Think Long Term
Your Piano should be tuned every year, which means, if at all possible it’s best to have the same technician working on it. This allows them to get to know your instrument and be able to notice patterns and things to prepare for on return visits. Bringing in a new technician time and time again can cost you more money because they need to start over each time.
This means you should also really like and trust your piano technician. Ronnie understands this is a repeat, long term business and he looks forward to getting to know you and your piano and building a lasting relationship.
In closing, thanks for reading this brief article describing three pointers on how to pick a piano tuner.
